Trump Orders Ban on Anthropic AI Use

President Donald Trump issued an order for all U.S. government agencies to immediately stop using Anthropic’s AI technology, with a six-month transition period granted to departments like the Department of War.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth classified Anthropic as a national security 'supply-chain risk' following a 5 p.m. Friday deadline, during which the company was expected to accept Pentagon terms. The designation prohibits defense contractors from utilizing Anthropic’s AI systems.

Anthropic confirmed it had not received any direct communication from the Pentagon or White House regarding the negotiations’ status by the Friday deadline.

The company maintained its refusal to abandon two core demands: a ban on AI deployment for fully autonomous weapons and a prohibition against mass domestic surveillance. Anthropic argued the Pentagon’s latest contract language was legally flawed and could undermine existing safeguards.
